Activities, Committees and Volunteers

ACTIVITIES, COMMITTEES and VOLUNTEERS

Please find information on this page about our events, as well as information about volunteer and donation needs throughout the year.  The best way to support our school community is to participate in as many of our events as your family is able.  If you have the time, please remember that many hands makes light work-you are welcome to team up with a friend, spouse or neighbor to help with PTO events.   Also, running an event or a committee does not necessarily require daytime availability or attendance at PTO Meetings.

GENERAL MILLS BOX TOPS:  365 days per year!  Keep clipping J

This is a great way for parents and extended family and friends to help our school.  It is also super fun and easy for the kids to help!   Simply collect the “Box Tops for Education” labels from participating General Mills products.  Contests and other fun ways of donating Box Tops will occur throughout the school year. However, there is no need to wait for a contest; please continue to collect throughout the year! Middlesex Elementary receives money from General Mills for each Box Top the PTO submits.

GIANT A+ REWARDS (October through May)

This is an ongoing program with Giant Foods.  All you need to do is register your bonus card to support Middlesex Elementary, Carlisle PA and Giant will donate 1% of what you spend during the months of Octoboer through May to benefit our PTO.  This really adds up and has been a very successful source of income for the PTO.  It only takes a few moments of your time.  To register, you can set up an online account with Giant Foods, or simply stop by the Customer Service desk at your local GIANT.

     Middlesex Elementary’s Giant A+ Rewards number is ID# 20942

SNACK SUPERSTARS!  (all year long)

We love snacks!  Throughout the year we solicit baked goods (homemade or store-bought), and/or drinks or other snacks for a variety of events, appreciation days and student incentives.  Interested in being a snack superstar?  Make sure that your child’s Room Parent has your contact information and keep your eyes and ears open throughout the year for Time to Sign Up announcements.

ROOM PARENTS (all year long)

Room parents are the key to helping the PTO communicate with parents, soliciting donations and volunteers and assisting teachers with organizing class parties and other activities.  Room parents are solicited and selected early in the school year, with additional volunteers needed in each classroom to help with parties, donating supplies and assisting with events such as Fall Festival.   Our Room Parents only reach out to gather their parent contact information during the beginning of the year.  If you did not see sign-up information at the beginning of the school year, or if you would like to make sure that your child’s room parent icludes you in communication, please reach out to your child’s teacher so that he or she can forward your contact information to your Room Parent.

FALL FUNDRAISER ( September) AND MOUNTAIN LION MARCH (April)

Why are these two events together?  They are our only two fundraiser events of the year…that’s why! The Fall fundraiser includes yummy food items and various small household and paper goods, perfect for holiday giving.  The Spring fundraiser is our fabulous Mountain Lion March where every student participates in a fun walk/run, supported by sponsorships from family, friends and neighbors.  These two fundraisers are our main sources of income, and they are repeated each year because of their terrific success.  Please consider supporting the PTO with active participation by purchasing, and/or encouraging others to purchase from our Fall sale, and reaching out to loved ones to sponsor your child(ren) for our Mountain Lion March.

Currently, Executive Board Members run both events, but volunteers are welcome to shadow with the intent of taking over the organization of the event(s) in future years.  Helpers are needed ONE AFTERNOON during the Fall to help distribute fundraiser products; parent/family spectators are welcome during the Mountain Lion March in the Spring.  Keep your eyes and ears open for details as the events approach.

ROLLER SKATING PARTIES  (2 Saturday evenings per year)

At least twice per year the PTO sponsors FREE family skating parties at the Carlisle Sports Emporium.  This is a fantastic event for our entire Middlesex community. Voluntary “cost” of skate rentals and admission for the entire family is a donation of a small item of need at the school; specific items of need (such as a box of tissues or hand sanitizer) are announced prior to the event.  Want a fun, easy way to volunteer?   A volunteer organizer is appreciated to make sure the event is advertised and our donations make it back to school, but the fantastic Sports Emporium staff does all the work.

HOLIDAY SHOPPEFirst weekend in December

The Holiday Shoppe is a fun-filled event where students have an opportunity to shop for that ultimate holiday gift for relatives and friends.   This can be done “in secret” so that parents and siblings don’t know what is under the gift wrap.   This is a family event with additional activities and snacks for the entire family.  Donations of baked goods, as well as parent (and older sibling!) volunteers are needed to help students make their purchases, wrap presents, assist with cookies and milk and various other activities.

BINGO NIGHT-WINTER

Our annual Family Bingo night is a great evening of fun for the entire family.  Come out to play, eat, socialize….and perhaps win some great prizes.  The BINGO committee is responsible for planning, organizing and carrying out Bingo Night from start to finish.  Volunteers are needed to be table attendants, run the refreshment stand, donate baked goods, and solicit prizes from area businesses.  We also welcome donations of homemade crafts, personal services, gift certificates or other items suitable for use as prizes.  This is a perfect opportunity for the working parent, as we hold Bingo on a Saturday night.   Keep your eyes and ears open for Time To Sign Up request for donations/volunteers early in the new year.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT - MAY

This amazing family event is fun for the entire family.  Carnival games, food, bounce houses, prizes, face-painting and more!  The Family Fun Night committee is responsible for planning, organizing, and carrying out this carnival-type event.  Volunteers are needed for short volunteer windows so that you can enjoy the rest of the night with your family.  Help set up or clean up, sell tickets and refreshments, run games, staff food stands and donate baked goods. Keep your eyes and ears open for Time To Sign Up request for donations/volunteers early in the Spring.

STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON-MAY

The PTO holds a luncheon on a day set aside in May to show our appreciation to the staff for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.  The chairperson(s) for this event plan the theme, organize and set up the luncheon.  Many volunteers are needed to donate food items.

YEARBOOK

Volunteers are needed to take pictures during school events and to organize page layouts.  Digital cameras are a plus!

**NOTE REGARDING VOLUNTEER CLEARANCES-The Commonwealth has mandated that most volunteers who work with children complete a variety of background checks.   Please CLICK HERE to be directed to the district’s VOLUNTEER CLEARANCES page with information on how to complete your clearances, or to submit copies of current clearances that you might already hold.  Not all PTO volunteer positions require clearances, although to volunteer during the school day, serve as Room Parent, or chaperone field trips (as just a few examples) will require current clearances.
