Problem Based Service Learning

If you spend time at a soup kitchen, you are helping others through doing community service. Doing community service is a wonderful way to help those who are in need around you, and to help make your community a better place! Many individuals in our community would say that service is a vital part to being an active citizen.
Service-learning takes it one (big) step further, by having the students create the project that is being done. This teaching style brings together many different techniques such as place-based learning, project-based learning, and community service to create a powerful learning tool.
One of the most important aspects of service-learning is the student led style that it often uses. This places the teacher more of a guiding role than the dispenser of knowledge. As a guide for students, it is important to give the necessary scaffolding to support the learning of the group. While it is challenging to set one approach for service-learning, the info-graphic below provides many useful pointers!
